SmartSights Mobile — Upgrade FAQs
-
Is SmartSights Mobile included in my current subscription, or do I have to pay for it?
SmartSights Mobile is included with WIN-911 2025 subscriptions — there's no separate purchase required to access the new app. If you're on an active Customer Care subscription, upgrading to WIN-911 2025 is your path to SmartSights Mobile. If you're unsure what your subscription covers, contact us and we'll help you sort it out.
-
Does migrating to SmartSights Mobile change my licensing costs?
The migration itself does not add a new line item to your bill. If your subscription is current, you're covered. That said, if your subscription has lapsed or you're on a legacy perpetual license, now is a good time to review your options — both to get access to SmartSights Mobile and to stay on supported software before the December 15, 2026 deadline.
-
Will my team lose access to alarms during the migration?
Alarms will continue to appear in your HMI as normal throughout the process. However, remote notifications — including the mobile app — will be temporarily unavailable while the upgrade is underway. To minimize that window, we recommend two things before starting: have every operator install SmartSights Mobile and update to a WIN-911 2025 license first. With both of those in place ahead of time, the cutover is as short as possible and your team is ready to go the moment the upgrade completes.
-
Does SmartSights Mobile do everything WIN-911 Mobile did?
Yes — and then some. Every core capability from WIN-911 Mobile is present in SmartSights Mobile: push notifications, alarm acknowledgment, and real-time monitoring. On top of that, SmartSights Mobile adds a Personalized Alarm Summary, tag-based persistent chat, multi-site consolidation, WIN-911 Status visibility, an improved Operator Workspace, and — for XLReporter and SmartBundle users — direct access to process data and on-demand reports. Nothing was removed; the feature set only grew.
-
What if my team is used to the way WIN-911 Mobile works? Will there be a learning curve?
The core workflows are familiar — receive a notification, review the alarm, acknowledge it. The interface has been improved and reorganized, but operators who have used WIN-911 Mobile will find their footing quickly. For teams that want a structured introduction, SmartSights offers training resources and our support team is available to help.
-
Our IT team is cautious about new apps touching our plant network. How does SmartSights Mobile handle security?
SmartSights Mobile is specifically designed so that mobile devices do not require direct access to your internal plant network. Authentication runs through Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Entra ID. All communication between the app and your WIN-911 system is outbound-initiated, meaning you don't need to open inbound ports on your firewall. For organizations that want an additional layer of separation, the Distributed deployment option routes traffic through a SmartSights Edge Gateway installed on a separate network layer — such as your DMZ or business network — keeping your process network fully isolated. A full security overview is available in the Knowledge Base.
-
How long does the migration actually take?
For most sites, the migration can be completed in under an hour. The process involves upgrading to WIN-911 2025 (if not already done), installing the SmartSights Edge Gateway if using the Distributed deployment, and having operators download and log into the new app. The migration guide covers every step.
-
What happens if we don't migrate before December 15, 2026?
On December 15, 2026, SmartSights will terminate the cloud services that make WIN-911 Mobile functional. After that date, WIN-911 Mobile push notifications will stop — full stop. Email, SMS, and voice notifications will continue to be sent, so those channels aren't at risk. But any operator relying on the mobile app for alarm notifications will go dark.
The risk doesn't start on December 15 either — it starts with any iOS or Android update that introduces a breaking change in the legacy app before that date. With no further development on WIN-911 Mobile, there will be no patch if something breaks early. Migrating now means you control the timing instead of reacting to a failure.
-
We're running an older version of WIN-911. Do we need to upgrade that too?
Yes — SmartSights Mobile requires WIN-911 2025 or later. If you're on an older version, the migration is a two-step process: upgrade WIN-911 first, then migrate to SmartSights Mobile. Your Customer Care subscription covers the WIN-911 upgrade. If you need help planning the sequence, reach out to our support team and we can walk through it with you.
