Define roles for each kind of personnel who will interact with the alarm system, for example, 'engineering', 'maintenance', or 'operations'. Then when someone leaves the organization and a new person joins, no alterations to the system are necessary. In addition, roles enable stepped call-out. If one person in the role is unavailable, the system can send a notification to the next person in the role or all contacts in the role based on schedules. 

Roles represent a label for organizing connections based on availability, location, or responsibility. Roles can be used in a notification tactic to notify all connections with something in common.
