Since 1989, International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) has raised awareness about the importance of taking preventative measures to decrease the devastation that natural disasters can have on communities. On October 13, citizens and governments internationally are encouraged to consider what they can do to prepare for disasters.
IDDR began in 1989 with approval by the United Nations General Assembly. The goal was to promote a global culture of disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness. Each year, IDDR focuses on a different theme. This year, the theme is Resilience is for Life, which highlights how the older population can play a critical role in resilience-building through experience and knowledge.
